•The methods of biofunctional properties improvement of TiO2 nanotubes are proposed.•The increase of TiO2 nanotubes diameter promotes the U2OS cell proliferation.•Calcium phosphate coating deposited TiO2 nanotube layer promotes the cell growth.•Deposition of Ag nanoparticles inhibits the survivability of S. epidermidis cells.
