From Twitter to detector: real-time traffic incident detection using social media data

•We propose to mine tweet texts to extract incident information on both highways and arterials.•Twitter is an efficient and cost-effective alternative to existing data sources.•More incidents are provided by Twitter on weekends than on weekdays.•The number of incidents reported by individual users decays outwards from the city center.
