This paper retraces the changing focus of international management research from structural firms to interpersonal skills and multicultural capabilities. Matrix organisations, decision rights, information processing, knowledge integration, and global team are discussed as stages in the evolution of research as the underlying phenomenon moved from operational integration to global innovation.
