•The correlation between carotid IMT and metabolic parameters were assessed in T2DM.•In postmenopausal women, cholesterol levels were important predictors of carotid IMT.•Cholesterol levels are not related to IMT in premenopausal women.•For men, other factors including BMI and insulin levels should also be considered.
