Root distribution by depth for temperate agricultural crops

•A general root distribution with depth that includes a maximum crop rooting depth was not available previously. This contribution will improve characterization of roots for agroecosystem studies.•Root distribution pattern was fitted to a versatile equation for 11 temperate crops.•Roots were thicker at upper layers with the effect was greater for dicotyledons than monocotyledons.•At least 50% of roots could be found in the upper 20cm of soil for all crops.
