•High frequency heart rate variability (HRV) predicted depressive symptom self-report among adolescents one year later.•The association between high frequency heart rate variability and depressive symptoms persists across one year.•In accordance with rodent models of depression, anhedonia one year later best explained variance in high frequency heart rate variability.
