Structure of small mammal communities on clearings in managed Central European forests

•Diversity of small mammal communities at small-sized clearings was comparable to mature forests.•Both, forest and open habitat, species occurred at small-sized clearings.•Structure of small mammal communities was related mainly to the local habitat conditions.•Re-forestation using small-sized clearings enables to maintain higher biodiversity of forests.
