Strain-based criteria for mixed-mode fracture of polycrystalline graphite

•The onset of fracture in graphite subjected to mixed-mode loading is studied.•The strain/stress-based fracture criteria are compared with test data for graphite.•The effect of T-strain is significant in the fracture of Brazilian disk graphite.•The strain-based criterion including T-strain effect provides us the best prediction.
