Sharing hand gesture and sketch cues in remote collaboration.

•Effect of adding sketch cue to the hand gesture cue was different by the task type.•Additional sketch cue helped completing the repair task (a complex task) faster.•Additional sketch cue did not help completing the Lego task (an easy task) faster.•Regardless of the task type, additional sketch cue increased level of task load.•The increased task load was due to the using sketch together with still images.
