•γ-T3 inhibits OXPHOS and triggers the production of ROS in cancer cells.•γ-T3 upregulates the glycolytic capacity in cells, but does not compensate for cellular ATP generation in cells.•γ-T3 specifically decreases the levels of NDUFB8 (a subunit of complex I) and SDHB (a subunit of complex II).
