Emergency nurses' knowledge and understanding of their role in recognising and responding to patients with sepsis: A qualitative study.

•ED nurses identified deficits in recognition and response to patients with sepsis.•ED nurses were unfamiliar with common sepsis screening and prognostic tools.•ED nurses identified that their role in recognising patients with sepsis is crucial.•Organisational factors impacted on ED nurses’ responses to sepsis.•Context-specific education including a nurse-inclusive sepsis pathway is suggested.
