Decreased functional brain response to emotional arousal and increased psychiatric symptomology in FMR1 premutation carriers.

•BOLD response to emotional processing is reduced in male FMR1 premutation carriers.•No BOLD group x age interaction was found, suggesting stability of emotional changes.•Premutation carriers exhibited worse psychiatric symptomatology.•Carriers show increased autistic traits and impaired facial emotion recognition.•Clinical and neuropsychological measurements also showed no relationship with age.
