Orthostatic blood pressure variability is associated with lower visual contrast sensitivity function: Findings from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Aging

•Orthostatic hypotension, orthostatic hypertension and some forms of blood pressure variability have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events.•On a population level, one in four individuals aged over 50 years demonstrated this phenotype of blood pressure variability.•Orthostatic blood pressure variability was associated with lower visual contrast sensitivity.•Blood pressure variability may influence target-organ damage.
