•Androgens stimulated the expression of ep1 in the olfactory rosette of B. sinensis.•The stimulatory effect of androgens on ep1 expression was mediated by Ar.•The expression level of arα increased with spermatogenesis.•Activated Arα transactivated the ep1 promoter in HEK293T cells.•Some OSNs exhibited co-localization of arα mRNAs and Ep1 proteins.
