•The interactions between anthraquinones and βLG were investigated.•The anthraquinones bound to the side near Trp19–Arg124 on βLG.•The order of binding increased with increasing polarity of anthraquinones.•Complexing with βLG increases the hydrosolubility of anthraquinones.
