•Stereotypical movements in autism are presumably related to arousal yet unexplained.•No study to date has examined their instant, provoked cardiovascular changes.•All stereotypy seems to show a canonical cardiac acceleration/deceleration.•These responses precede movement, and are somewhat consistent between people.•Stereotypy may have a characteristic cardiac coupling.
