Spatial and temporal variability of biomass and composition of green tides in Ireland.

•Irish blooms were multi-specific, with three frequent and abundant Ulva species.•A seasonal succession between at least the two Ulva species was identified.•The laminar and tubular morphologies showed different distribution patterns.•An important annual and decadal variability in biomass levels of Ulva was observed.
