•An advanced thermo-mechanical coupled finite element model for MEW was developed.•The heat transfer and friction model were incorporated into a 3D FEA model of MEW.•The model was found to perform high accuracy by comparing with experimental data.•Effect of thermal and friction model on tyre cornering behavior were investigated.
