•Micronucleus (MN) tests were integrated into a transgenic rat gene mutation assay.•gpt delta rats were orally administered benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) for 28 days.•B[a]P induced gene mutation in bone marrow, liver, and colon.•B[a]P induced MN in bone marrow and peripheral blood, but not in liver or colon.•No remarkable difference was observed in mutant frequencies between sampling times.
