•A life probe is proposed that determines if genetic sequence is biological or not.•The classification based on information theory is used.•The method is successfully validated in the context of RNA World hypothesis.•It is demonstrated that proposed measures are superior to random classifiers.•Sequences related to replication have better discriminative capabilities.
