•The overall risk of mortality is 11.4% on patients with Critical Care Complications (CCC) following elective hepatectomies compared to 1.3% in the non-CCC group.•LOS tripled in patients with CCC after liver resection.•ASA class, diabetes, COPD and pre-operative sepsis are the most significant predictors of CCC.•Patients with CCC are associated with a significant increased risk of 30-day mortality up to 26 fold after case matching.
