•Poorly management pain is associated with increased symptoms including pain interference, anxiety, sleep disturbance and fatigue in breast cancer survivors.•Nurses and other healthcare providers should screen breast cancer survivors for post-treatment symptoms during routine visits.•There is great variability in the symptom experience for breast cancer survivors.•Rural and minority breast cancer survivors may experience disparities in symptom assessment and management.
