•MU limiting strategy for VMAT planning of hypopharyngeal cancer is evaluated.•Influence of MU tool and intermediate dose feature on PRO3 is studied.•Dose rate and MLC aperture area changes are quantified and related to resultant MU.•Plan merit is established to assist in choosing the best possible planning strategy.
