Patient knowledge of anticoagulant treatment does not correlate with treatment quality.

•We assessed patient knowledge of vitamin K antagonist treatment by a validated instrument in 106 patients.•We did not find a correlation between objective knowledge and treatment stability.•We found that the patient's own assessment of knowledge was not associated with objective knowledge.•The results implicate that subjective knowledge assessment is not sufficient for selection of patients for self-testing.
