•Investigated the impacts of residential greenness on birth outcomes.•Strong positive impacts of residential greenness on birth weight and SGA in unadjusted models.•This relationship was due to confounding by individual and neighborhood characteristics.•Consistent patterns of greenness and race/ethnicity and education merits further attention.•Evidence for protective effects for Hispanics, low education and low income neighborhoods.
