•High phosphorus promote growth but have no effect on lipid accumulation of T. minus.•FeC6H5O7·NH4OH was beneficial for biomass production and lipid accumulation.•T. minus could grow at a large range of CO2 concentration.•A strategy of enhancing lipid productivity of T. minus was proposed.
