•Obese subjects exhibited higher hs-CRP levels and NRS scores than non-obese controls.•History of depression (MDD) was associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms.•No association was found between MDD history and hs-CRP levels in obese subjects.•The relationship of hs-CRP with NRS scores was not modulated by MDD history.
