摘要

•We identified the β-carotene monohydroxylase gene (EgCYP97H1) in Euglena gracilis.•This study is the first evidence of β-carotene monohydroxylase.•EgCYP97H1 was essential for carotenoid biosynthesis and normal growth in this alga.
