•We assessed 119 patients with unequivocal TLE-HS and 113 healthy volunteers.•Individuals were genotyped for the MAOA-uVNTR polymorphism.•There was an association between MAOA-uVNTR and higher seizure frequency.•There was an association between MAOA-uVNTR and higher frequency of bilateral tonic-clonic seizures.
