•Metabolic syndrome affects 1 in 3 adults within the United States.•Little is known about the cardiometabolic health effects of low-level toxic metal exposures.•Research on essential metals in relation to cardiometabolic health is also sparse.•In this study, metal biomarkers were associated with prevalent metabolic syndrome.
