Relations between trait anxiety and depression: A mediated moderation model.

•Trait anxiety is closely associated with rumination and depression.•Cognitive flexibility moderates the relationship between trait anxiety and depression and can buffer the risk effect of trait anxiety on depression.•Rumination is a key mediator that accounts for 79.25% of the total variance in depression.•Special cognitive techniques and methods targeting rumination and cognitive flexibility may help to improve depression.
