The relationship between alcohol abuse and suicide risk according to smoking status: A cross-sectional study.

•Alcohol abuse and smoking were closely related to suicide risk.•Current smokers had the highest risk of suicide.•Risk of suicide was higher as alcohol abuse increased for the same smoking status.•Alcohol abuse and smoking combined increased the suicide risk more than separately.
