•This study found no association between hormonal contraceptive use and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH).•The odds ratio of hormonal contraceptive use and IIH was 0.55 (P = .146).•Based on these data, women with IIH may not need to avoid hormonal contraceptives.
