•A new avenue of using piezoelectric wafer active sensor (PWAS) to detect AE signals.•An inexpensive AE sensor.•PWAS shows higher signal-to-noise than the commercial AE sensors in the high-frequency region.•PWAS is suitable for capturing the fatigue AE signals in a thin plate-like structures.
