•Indirect labeling of RNA particles provides essentially “native labeling”.•The majority of the small ribosomal subunits is immobilized inside nucleoli.•1/3 of the small ribosomal subunits diffuses freely in the nucleoplasm.•1/3 of the small ribosomal subunits shows unexpected immobilizations in nucleoplasm.
