•DBS to NBM elicits neuroprotective effects in animal model of Alzheimer's disease.•DBS at 100 Hz for 21 d starting from 4 months of age exhibits optimized effects.•The effects result from activating PI3K/Akt pathway and inhibiting ERK1/2 pathway.
