•DTI abnormalities were seen in temporal and extratemporal lobes in MTS patients.•R- and L-MTS patients had extensive DTI abnormalities, independent of disease side.•There were no DTI differences between the L-MTS versus R-MTS, when compared directly.•DTI abnormalities were seen in FA, MD, and RD maps, in R- and L-MTS patients.
