Nonsuicidal self-injury, suicide ideation and suicide attempts in the National Guard.

•NSSI within the National Guard was in line with estimates of nonclinical samples of adults.•However, women were almost three times more likely to report NSSI than men.•Characteristics of NSSI were overwhelmingly similar between men and women.•Characteristics of NSSI were generally consistent with civilian community samples.
