摘要

•Foldable iris-fixated phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) induce a chronic endothelial cell (EC) loss of 63 cells/mm2 per year.•EC loss resulted in a critical EC density of <1500 cells/mm2 in up to 3.0% of eyes.•Chronic EC loss is higher in foldable vs rigid iris-fixated pIOLs.•Future studies on pIOLs should focus on assessment of inflammation and EC loss.
