•Depletion of CD8+ T cells in wild type mice abrogates cytokine responses to repeated foot-shocks.•T cell deficient mice have an attenuated cytokine response to repeated foot-shocks.•T cell deficient mice reconstituted wit CD8 T cells display enhanced cytokine responses to repeated foot-shocks.
