•DNPs applied onto agar plate do not directly kill bacteria (E. coli, B. subtilis, P. mirabilis).•DNPs form clusters on agar surface that are not able to bind to cells in the colony centre.•DNPs on agar act as the mechanical barrier for the passive lateral colony growth and active cell motility.
