•Chickens and turkeys develop a Toxoplasma gondii clonal type-specific IgY response.•Each bird recognised its own peptide pattern, which could also change over time.•Serotyping was possible using the whole peptide panel.•Serotyping worked well at the group level.•Toxoplasma gondii serotyping from individual animals was difficult.
