Transitions Between Bursting Modes in the Integrated Oscillator Model for Pancreatic β-cells.

•Oscillations are ubiquitous in insulin-secreting beta-cells of the pancreas.•These may be due to intrinsic glycolytic oscillations or calcium feedback onto glycolysis.•We illustrate here how transitions may be made from one oscillation mechanism to another.•The oscillations can persist when a rhythmogenic enzyme is replaced with a non-rhythmogenic one.
