•Suicide rate in HNC survivors significantly higher than the US population.•Male HNC survivors were six times more likely to commit suicide than females.•HPV-relatedness by anatomic proxy not associated with increased risk of suicide.•Widowed, separated and divorced HNC survivors at greater risk of suicide.•Blacks and Hispanic HNC survivors less likely than Whites to commit suicide.
