Family ties and functional limitation in the elderly: Results from the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE).

•Functional limitation is associated with biological and demographic factors.•Functional limitation is not associated with few family ties.•Low contact with family members seems to affect functional limitation.•Persons that live alone did not show worse functional status.•Southern and Mediterranean countries have both closer family ties and adults with higher functional limitation.
