•Valganciclovir (450 mg) effectively prevented posttransplantation cytomegalovirus infection.•Valganciclovir (450 mg) decreased the drug-induced side effects such as leukopenia.•This lower dose could prevent cytomegalovirus infection and enhance the cost-effectiveness.
