The effects of alcohol on plasma lipid mediators of inflammation resolution in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

•Alcohol can alter key enzymes involved in the synthesis of lipid mediators of inflammation resolution (SPM).•Plasma SPM were measured in a crossover study of the effects of red wine in patients with Type 2 Diabetes and baseline levels were compared with healthy volunteers.•Plasma SPM were not affected by drinking red wine for 4 weeks.•Several plasma SPM were elevated in Type 2 diabetes.•Elevated SPM levels in type 2 diabetes may be a homeostatic response to counter ongoing inflammation.
