•VST therapy was safely utilized in a patient with SCID in the pretransplant period without graft-versus-host disease.•VST infusion followed by transplant was associated with clearance of disseminated adenovirus.•VST infusion may be an effective therapy for viral infections in patients with SCID before transplantation.
