•The expression of MyHC α-cardiac was evaluated in sooty mangabey masseter and temporalis.•Proteomics identified Myosin-6 in superficial masseter and heart muscle.•IHC revealed an abundance of MyHC α-cardiac expressed in hybrid fibers.•Abundance of MyHC α-cardiac may relate to hard-object feeding by sooty mangabeys.
