Phylogeny and evolutionary radiation of the marine mussels (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) based on mitochondrial and nuclear genes.

•A most comprehensive phylogeny of the marine mussels based on both mitochondrial and nuclear genes is provided.•Two major clades are obtained, and the subfamily Modiolinae is not the ancestral group.•Most marine mussel groups are ancient while the deep-sea mussels diverge recently.•The multiple-locus phylogeny could aid taxonomic revision.
